Well, the first indication that we do actually live in a major city occurred today when we drove into town to return our hire car. All sorts of lights flashing, streets blocked off - pretty crazy and a large pain to get around. Turns out that it was actually a shooting which then froze most of downtown as the police began to hunt (and continue to hunt) for the shooter. You may not know it, but handguns of all types are illegal in Australia - surprising how little violence there is when handguns aren't allowed except by law enforcement. Today is actually the first shooting that we've heard about since Josh first arrived in November!
The main point of the post is that we're both safe, we made it to work fine and our days continued as scheduled while news continued to unfold about the incident. (Now it can be found on the front page of CNN as well). It's a chilling reminder that you never know when your time may come, and that you always have to be careful no matter how many times you've stopped at the same cafe, walked the same street, or shopped at the same market. In the world today bad things still happen to innocent people.

Please don't tell me it was an American that did the shooting...
Nope - Aussie - turned himself in two days later after his biker gang (Hells Angels) 'convinced him' it would be in his best interest to do so.
