Last night we were treated to a very special concert experience. The Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO) spent this past week in Melbourne participating in an innovative style workshop that is intended to explore new musical ideas and the changing role of the orchestral musician in the 21st Century. The focus of this year's workshop was improvisation, and as part of the workshop the orchestra worked with a well known Aussie band, The Cat Empire. At the end of the style workshop, the AYO and The Cat Empire held a concert at the Iwaki Auditorium in the ABC Southbank Centre. As Accenture is a major sponsor of the AYO and also the 'Major Presenting Partner' for the concert, they were given a certain number of tickets that they then offered to staff - we were one of the lucky couples to be given tickets to attend!
It's difficult to put into words just how great the music was. The Cat Empire has a funky sound and some fun songs, but then to add in the orchestral instruments - it took the music to a different level. All we can say is...IT WAS AWESOME!
We had an absolutely wonderful evening and wanted to share a bit of the music with you. Below is a video of The Cat Empire performing on ROVE Live recently (it's the local late show), as well their video for 'Two Shoes'. If you're interested in seeing/hearing more, search for them on YouTube and you will find a bunch of their videos there.
PS - Prior to the concert we had a very beautiful dinner at Pure South. It was a great start to our fabulous date night!
